This is my school magazine cover. For this I learnt how to cut pictures and make them into a layer to put onto the main background. I learnt how to do this by using the magnetic tracer tool. This was hard at first as you had to keep a steady hand but after a few attempts it became a lot easier.

This is my school magazine. I learnt how to crop and cut them into another layer by using the magnetic cutting tool. This helped me put Beth onto the front cover of the magazine to make it look more professional. I also learnt how to change the fonts and change the colour of my fonts as well as transforming the picture so that I can edit it. For the background, I used a blue box however went on blending options to blend in a darker blue. I also did this for the contents page for the purple into the pink. I chose to to this because it adds more contrast to the magazine, and it also makes the Title stand out that bit more due to the contrast between the Lime Green and the Navy Blue.
I decided that I wasn't happy with my DPS because I didn't think that the colour scheme chosen was that relate-able to the genre, and I also felt that I could do better, and make a better DPS to show what I can do. Therefore, I used the same Images, however added more text and changed the look of the page completely. I used a Black, red and White colour scheme to tie the page together more, however I kept a similar layout as I liked the layout on the previous DPS.
This is a lot different to the original DPS, but they are still similar. For example, the Images are the same however one of them is blacked out to make it silhouetted. I then also kept the background the same, however, I changed the saturation of the background to a dark tone to make it fit in with the colour scheme more. I also changed it because I believe that it is more relate-able to the RnB genre.
I then added in more text to make the page more filled and to also show the reader more on whats to offer. I made sure that I used the same font and also made sure that I kept within the color scheme so that the page tied together and so that it wasn't scruffy. I made 'KB' large and placed it next to the image of the main artist so that it could be related to the artist by the reader. I then also added in the page numbers so that the reader could see exactly what page the main artists feature was on. Next to the lower secondary image I also added text that the readers knew who the secondary image was. To make the text have an outer glow was was spaced out from the text I followed the steps below.
I wrote the text and sized and colored it to how I like it.
I then clicked the layer and selected blending options.
I the selected outer glow, and lowered the opacity and chose the color white as my the color that I wanted the glow to be.
I then clicked on the couture icon, and changed the graph to a 'cone' so that the outer glow separated itself from the writing.
I then added in the new images that I had taken. I chose to change the main image because it was the same picture that was on the front cover therefore, it looked more boring as it was the same image and was nothing new. As the article is about what happened with the main artist, I decided to have the artist unzipping his jacket as a metaphor as to what will be in the article as the artist is 'Unzipped' and open about what happened. I cropped him out using the pen tool as there was a lot of curves and so by using the pen tool, the curves are cut with more definition making them more professional and smooth and not rough. I then decided that more images where needed. Therefore I took pictures of some more artists. The lower picture is of 'SHEYEZ' and I made him look away from the camera so that it makes the reader wonder what his feature in the magazine is. I then also took a picture of Duo rappers and like the other image, Close up and Midi shots as the image was small and so I only wanted one section of them to be enlarged which is the face and upper body as that is what the reader would recognise. To crop them out, I used the polygonal tracer as its easier to cut around images and then cropped them and placed them in between the text to split the text up and make the page look busier.
I then took the text that was originally Brown and made it a eggshell blue so that it stood out more in comparison to the background and the title to make a variety of colour rather than a small colour scheme. I then made the font a lot smaller but kept it the same font and then placed the text into columns to make it look more professional. I did this by seperating the pages so that I could reshape the font and also so that I had more room inbetween the font to add more things in such as images or more text if needed. I used white as before to highlight key words but also used brown to highlight the heading of each page number so that it s easier for the reader to summarise over the text to see what page they want to go to as it catches the eye.
I started off my taking unticking all the layers except the base layers such as the cut out and the title so that I could change the placing of font without having too much on the page to do so. I made the cut out slightly bigger so that I could remould it to the picture because it was too small for the new picture that I had taken. I kept the title the same because I liked the style of it.
I started by taking a piece of paper and then crumbling it with my hands. I took a picture of it, and then put it onto Photoshop and enlarged it whilst holding CTRL+T+SHIFT to stop it pixelating. I then changed the saturation so that it was darker than a pure white paper and then added in some cream to the layer by using the brush to make the color that the background is so that it looked older. I then typed 'INSIDE' using the font 'Agency FB'. I then made the color a soft brown by using the eye dropped tool that matches the artists skin, however I then made it slightly darker to make it stand out slightly more. After this, I added an inner shadow to make the text look like it had been carved out. I then used a darker brown on a majority of the text except the white words of which stand out to summarise to the reader whats inside. I used the same font to make a link between the title and whats inside and also because I believe that it suits the page and is relatable to the target audience as it is a youthful, bold font and not elegant like you would expect to see in a flower magazine. To make the white cut out around the main image, I duplicated the background layer, I then used the brush tool to make the layer a pure white. By using the polyagonal tool, I then made jagged lines around the main image so that it looked like the Image is fitted to the cut out. I then deleted the rest of the layer that I didn't use by clicking CTRL+Shift +I to reverse it and then I deleted it. I then opened the image from my folder and then used the pen tool to cut around the artist so that the curves where defined properly. I then put a drop shadow around the white cut out to define it more and make it look like it was burnt out rather than cropped out.
To finish it off, I added on a pile of cash for the artist to stand on to show the artist what the interview is about - which is the success of the artist after going through the struggle to get to where they are know. I did this by taking the picture and then by using the polyagonal cutter to cut around the money. However, it looked slightly rough, and so I went on the paint brush tool, and faded the money into the background so that it blended in. I then made the 'wavey logo' which is the album that KB made. I did this paint and so it is a very simple design however makes the page more busier and so makes it look more professional. Beyonce's latest album has a plain design to it and so I decided to use the same idea as the Beyonce album so that it didn't clash with the background.
I then made more changes to my DPS to make it look more professional. I changed the placement of the font to make it fit around the long shot of the artist so that the writing could be read better and so that the full image could be seen. As well as the font I made changes to the design of the page. By using the paint tool and by holding shift, I made straight lines so that the page had more design to it. I then used a pale white outer glow to make the lines stand out slightly more in comparison to the background. I then also used full stops which where enlarged to make the dotted line going through the page to divide the Pages. I made them black but then lowered the opacity to make them seen but so that they are into the background.
I added in the images and the KB on the second page to make the page more busy but at the same time to make sure that it fitted around the text and to make sure that it fitted on the page and that it was a good size in comparison to the page and so that it looked professional. I used the magnetic tracer to cut them out and then added a small drop shadow to them to make the images pop.
I then added in the Article and the Interview to my Double Page Spread. I put them into columns and then changed the colour and font so that it fitted in with the background. The font that I used was Agency FB. I chose to use this font because it is professional yet it still has the youth with it because it is stretched out and quite poppy. Therefore, it stood out due to the color and so I chose to use this font for the background.
I then added the Headings and Subheadings to my double page spread. I changed the placement a couple times to see where the best place was one the page so that the rest of the images and text can fit it on the page. To make the text stand out, I chose to use a white background on the text with a faded black outer glow. I then reversed these colours on the 2 of 'back 2 my roots' so that the 2 stood out more than the text. I chose to only capitalise the word 'ROOTS' becuase I wanted to emphasise that the article is based upon life before and after his life as becoming KB the artist and so I only wanted to emphaise this word to connote the content of the article.
I chose to use this for the background of my DPS. I chose to continue the 'crumbled' look through out the magazine as it is relate-able to the magazine and the audience. Paper is a well used material in education of which a majority of my target audience will be in, and also because the crumbled paper connotes a messier magazine, that isn't meant to be tidy and mature, instead the magazine is for youths, and so is meant to be edgy and the crumbled paper identifies this.
I created this affect by crumpling paper and taken the picture on my phone. I then uploaded it onto photoshop, and selected a section of it that was especially crumpled and then buy using shift, I enlarged it to make sure that it didn't pixelate. However, like on the front cover, I wasn't happy with the pure white paper look and so once again I changed the saturation levels and made it slightly darker.
I then changed the layout of the text to make sure that the layout fitted in columns. I had to change the sizes of some of the fonts so that they would fit in columns properly to make them look professional. I then also added in some color to make words such as 'Kirahn Blake' pop out as that artist is the main feature of the magazine therefore it will be seen by the consumers quickly and will catch their eyes faster than what it would be if it was a more neutral color. I also then added in some more text to fill the page more and to show the readers what else the magazine has to offer inside. I used the color scheme Yellow, White and Blue on the text throughout the front cover as they are colours that pop. I put a yellow and blue outer glow on some of the text to make it stand out more in comparison to the background. I made sure that the same shades where used by using the eyedropper tool when selecting the color.
This is the 4th stage of the front cover. I added in a KB with a crown as that is the artsits logo and so it would be recognisable to the fans before they see the name. I also changed the location of the price and of the barcode as I didn't like the placement as to where they where before as the page looked slightly over-packed and so I moved a couple things around to make the page look full but still not as busy.
I also put the royal blue on the price to make it stand out as it is an important aspect to the magazine. However, i made the opacity less to make it stand out more than the other text does because it needs to be seen.
I then added in the Text. I kept the wording but just changed the Artists name. I also kept the fonts the same for the 'KIRAHN BLAKE' however, I did change the colour of the outer glow to a royal blue so that it stood out in comparison to the white font and the darker backgroud. I made the outer glow opaque so that it is seen but so that it isnt the main feature as I dont want it to be the main feature, but more to add colour to the page. I did this by clicking the layer and then editing what it looked like on blending options. It took a while to choose the right shade of blue and get the right opacity, but I chose this blue over a lighter blue becuase I think it stands out enough but is still hidden in the background.
I then dragged in an image taken from my phone of the Main Artist and pushed (CTRL+Shift+T) and then held the Shift button the enlarge the image without it pixilating. I made it the full size of the A4 page and then released the shift. I then went on the Magnetic Cropper tool and cut out the background so that I had just the artist on the front cover and not the background. I did it bit by bit as it took a while to make it it trace the correct line as the colours are similar in some places of the image. I ended up using the pen tool to trace around the artists head and hat becuase the colours where just too similar to the background and so it was just cutting them away. This tool took a while to get used to but then became easier to use.
I put a slight stroke around the artist to make it stand out slightly more, and I also airbrushed away blemishes on his face to make it look more professional. I did this by clicking the eyedropper tool to make sure I had the correct tone of his face, and then used a small brush on the 'lightner' setting to aribrush the blemishes away.
This is the background for the front cover with the Orginial Text used from the Draft. I didnt change the Text becuase I felt that it represented the genre of RnB well. I also kept the font becuase it is Bold and Stands out and So will stand out in a Market when it is sold with its competitors.
I made the background by Taking a peice of paper and crumbling it up. I then made that the base layer and then took the paint tool and airbrushed a cream body all over the page to make the page and off white colour. I wasnt happy at first with the colour, and wanted it to be slightly darker. So, to do this I changed the saturation level to make it darker. I also put a slight drop shadow around the title but kept the spread close. I did this by clicking on blending options and adding an 'outer glow', but changed the opacity to a lighter level and made the colour black.
These are the images that I decided not to use for my School Magazine and the Prezi shows some examples of these images that I didnt use and the reason for not using them.
This is my Double Page Spread. In it contains the Interveiw and the Article based upon Frank Ocean and a quote and Main Image on the Previous Page to show the reader what to expect and what the Article and Main Image is based upon.
